Tour Itinerary

Ninh Binh day trip

Overview of Ninh Binh tour 1 day

Travelers often wonder over Halong Bay versus Ninh Binh when they only have a single free day. Halong Bay needs an overnight cruise to feel real.

A Ninh Binh day trip delivers limestone karst landscapes, a UNESCO site, a 10th-century capital, a hilltop panorama, and a countryside boat ride, all before dinner.

The province sits 95 kilometers south of Hanoi, roughly a 2-hour drive on the CT01 expressway.

That proximity is what makes the Hanoi to Ninh Binh day trip so popular with European, American, and Australian visitors who land in Hanoi with limited time.

This itinerary covers what every well-planned Ninh Binh tour from Hanoi should include: Hoa Lu Ancient Capital (Cố đô Hoa Lư), a boat ride at Tam Coc (Tam Cốc), the Mua Cave viewpoint (Hang Múa), plus a proper Vietnamese lunch featuring local goat meat (thịt dê) and burnt rice (cơm cháy).

8:00 AM: Pickup in Hanoi

Our driver and English-speaking guide arrive at your hotel lobby at 8:00 AM.

We exit Hanoi via the Phap Van-Cau Gie expressway (Cao tốc Pháp Vân – Cầu Giẽ).

Around 9:00 AM we make a 15-minute rest stop at a clean roadside café for Vietnamese iced milk coffee (cà phê sữa đá) or tea (trà).

10:00 AM: Hoa Lu Ancient Capital (Cố đô Hoa Lư)

Around 10:00 AM, you arrive at Hoa Lu, capital of Vietnam from 968 to 1010 AD under the Đinh and early Lê dynasties (nhà Đinh và nhà Tiền Lê).

Two main temples remain: the temple of King Dinh (Đền Vua Đinh Tiên Hoàng) and the temple of King Le (Đền Vua Lê Đại Hành).

You’ll spend 60 to 90 minutes here. The carved stone dragons (rồng đá) at Vua Dinh’s temple are the highlight; this stonework predates Angkor Wat by centuries.

With a private guide, ask specifically about the Dai Co Viet (the ancient name of Vietnam) period and why Hoa Lu was chosen for its defensive karst walls.

12:00 noon: Authentic Local Lunch

Lunch is served à la carte at a family-run restaurant in Tam Coc village, typically Thang Long restaurant or a similar local kitchen on Trang An Road.

1:30 PM: Tam Coc Boat Ride

You drift down the Ngo Dong River (Sông Ngô Đồng) through three caves: Hang Ca (Hang Cả), Hang Hai, Hang Ba.

The rowers (người chèo thuyền) often paddle with their feet, a Ninh Binh tradition (chèo thuyền bằng chân) that genuinely surprises first-time visitors.

The views here are pure open rice paddies (cánh đồng lúa) framed by karst cliffs. This is the postcard Ninh Binh.

The tradeoff: Tam Coc rowers will often try to sell embroidery (đồ thêu) mid-river.

A polite “không, cảm ơn” (no thank you) works. Tip expectation is a small amount per rower at the end, which your guide will remind you about.

My personal recommendation for a private Ninh Binh day tour: choose Trang An if it’s your first visit and you want the wow factor.

Choose Tam Coc if you’re visiting in late May to early June or late September to early October when the rice turns gold (lúa chín vàng).

4:00 PM: Mua cave (Hang Múa)

Save your energy for this. Hang Mua means “Dancing Cave” (Hang Múa, literally “the dancing cave”), but nobody comes for the cave. You come for the climb.

Around 500 limestone steps (bậc thang đá) rise to a stone dragon statue (tượng rồng đá) perched on top of Ngoa Long Mountain (Núi Ngọa Long, meaning “Lying Dragon Mountain”).

The view from the top is the most photographed angle in northern Vietnam: the Ngo Dong River winding through Tam Coc’s rice fields, with karst peaks scattered to the horizon.

Roughly 20 to 30 minutes up if you’re fit, 40 to 50 minutes if you take it easy. The private car format means we wait. No rushing back to a coach with 30 impatient strangers.

Three insider tips most blogs miss:

The dragon viewpoint (đỉnh rồng) on the right gets crowded. Climb the slightly steeper left peak (đỉnh chùa, the pagoda side) for nearly the same view with a third of the people.

Stone steps get slippery after rain. Wear shoes with grip, not flip-flops (dép tông).

5:30 PM: Return to Hanoi

We leave Hang Mua around 5:30 PM. Traffic into Hanoi between 6:30 and 7:30 PM can add 20 to 30 minutes. Expected return: 7:00 to 7:30 PM.

Please make sure to collect all your belongings before exiting the vehicle. Your guide will say goodbye at your hotel and wrap up the tour. Conclude the Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi.
