The drive south to Ninh Binh covers roughly 180 km of expressway through Hai Phong and takes about 3 hours.

13:00 | Short drive to Trang An
After lunch, the car covers the short distance to Trang An in about 15 minutes. The full name of the site is the Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex.
UNESCO listed it in 2014 as a mixed cultural and natural site, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, and Vietnam’s government also ranks it as a special national monument.
Hoa Lu, the ancient capital of Vietnam in the 10th century, lies within the same protected zone. Its limestone karsts, rice fields and river valleys give the area a serene river landscape and a strong reputation for natural beauty.
Trang An’s stunning cave system is what sets it apart from other boat trips in the region: the river runs straight through the mountains, so boats pass underneath the rock rather than around it.

At the entrance, the guide handles the tickets and walks the group to the boat pier.
Each small sampan carries up to four or five passengers and is rowed by a local boatman or boatwoman.

Vang Cave comes next, a 250 m passage named for the loud echo oars make against the rock. Locals also call it Hang Ca, the fish grotto, because many species of fish live in its waters.
Beyond it lies Thuy Dinh, a water pavilion where traditional music and folk performances take place during festivals. The pavilion faces Vu Lam Royal Palace, and the ridge behind it looks like a phoenix with its wings spread.

With its village-style architecture and calm setting, Thuy Dinh ranks among the most photographed spots in Trang An.
Thanh Truot Cave follows. According to legend, the monk Nguyen Minh Khong passed here during the reign of King Ly Than Tong while searching for medicine for the king.
He was so taken with the view that he slipped and fell, which gave the place its name, meaning “Sacred Slip”.
Further along, Dia Linh Mountain rises straight out of the water like a pen tower, and just past it stands Suoi Tien Temple, where Saint Quynh Minh Dai Vuong and his wife are worshipped.
Dai Cave, whose name means “big”, is one of the widest passages on the route, and its high ceiling keeps the air inside cool and open.
The last stop is Vu Lam Royal Palace, a Tran Dynasty military base in the core of the complex.
The early Tran kings gathered troops here before the counterattacks that freed Dai Viet during the second and third Mongol invasions in the 1280s.
The site is also tied to the Tran kings who later gave up the throne to become monks and spread Buddhism.

From Vu Lam, the boat rows back toward the pier. The return leg has fewer stops, which leaves time for photos from the boat as it passes rice fields and karst ridges.
The slower pace on the way back offers a sense of tranquility after the walking at Bai Dinh.
15:30 | Return drive to Halong port
The boat reaches the pier around 15:30, and the vehicle is ready for the return journey.
Unlike tours that start from Hanoi, this one does not head back to Hanoi; the driver goes straight to Halong port on the same expressway.
