8:00 am: Meeting at Halong cruise port
Your guide will be standing at the outside gate of the terminal with a welcome board showing your name.

Most ships clear the gangway or the tender around 8:00 am, so this is the usual meeting window and it can be moved later if the captain announces a delay.

8:15 am: Private transfer from Halong Bay port to Hanoi
The road to Hanoi from Halong runs about 160 km from the Ha Long Bay waterfront and takes roughly two and a half hours on the Ha Long, Hai Phong and Hanoi expressways.
Your tour guide will give an overview of Hanoi along the way, from the founding of the city in 1010 to the trade names still painted on shopfronts today, which gives you some context for the rich culture behind the attractions in Hanoi that follow.

11:00 am to 11:30 am: Ho Chi Minh complex in Ba Dinh Square
You will arrive in Hanoi between 11:00 and 11:30 am, depending on the bridge traffic at Chuong Duong.
The first stop is Ba Dinh Square, where your guide walks you around the grounds and explains what each building is.
The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, the resting place of the leader most of Vietnam still calls Uncle Ho, is seen from outside, since the interior closes to visitors on Mondays and Fridays and shuts for annual maintenance in the autumn.

Behind the Presidential Palace stands the stilt house where President Ho Chi Minh lived on and off from 1958 to 1969, a plain two-room building beside a carp pond.
At the far end of the same grounds, the Ho Chi Minh Museum gives useful background on his role in Vietnam and the world for anyone who wants more detail than a garden walk allows.
12:15 pm: One Pillar Pagoda and the Temple of Literature
Beside the museum, you will find the One Pillar Pagoda, a small wooden shrine raised on a single stone column above a square lake.
The original dates from 1049 under Emperor Ly Thai Tong and its shape suggests a lotus rising from the water, which is why the building has become one of the most iconic images in the country.

Ten minutes by car separates it from the country’s first university, founded in 1070 and still laid out as five walled courtyards running back from the main gate.
The third courtyard holds 82 stone stelae mounted on turtles, each carved with the names of doctoral graduates from the imperial examinations.
About an hour here allows a full circuit at an easy pace with time for photographs.
1:00 pm: Lunch at a local restaurant
Lunch is served at a Vietnamese restaurant in the center of the city, a short drive from the temple.
The set menu leans on northern dishes such as cha ca fish with turmeric and dill, fresh nem rolls, morning glory with garlic and a clear soup, all shared family style at your own table.
Vegetarian, halal and allergy-friendly meals can be prepared when you tell us at the time of booking.
Roughly one hour is set aside for the meal, which also lets the driver reposition the car at the edge of the old streets.
2:00 pm: Walking tour of the Old Quarter
2:30 pm: Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple
The walk ends at Hoan Kiem Lake, called Sword Lake in English after the legend of King Le Loi returning a magic sword to a golden turtle.
This water in the heart of the city is where the old trading streets meet the French colonial districts and locals still treat it as the soul of Hanoi.

A red arched bridge called The Huc crosses to the temple on the small island, a nineteenth-century shrine honouring the general Tran Hung Dao and the scholar Van Xuong.
Free time follows for shopping, coffee or a slow lap of the lakeside path and it is a good moment to discover Hanoi at your own speed before the group meets at the agreed pickup point.
3:30 pm: Return to the port
Departure from the city is timed to your ship, with 3:30 pm as the normal cut-off for a 6:00 pm all aboard.
The drive back to Halong Port follows the same expressway and takes about two and a half hours, arriving around 6:00 pm.
Your guide stays with the group until you reach the terminal, and our office tracks the vehicle so that any delay is reported to the ship’s agent straight away. The tour ends at Halong International Cruise Port.
