Originally, this pagoda faced east, overlooking the Long Binh River, where there was a boat dock near the banyan tree for the villagers to conveniently go to the pagoda to listen to the sutras and worship Buddha, so it was named Wat Kompong Ch'ray (Banyan Tree Dock Pagoda).
At the beginning of the 20th century, the pagoda added a side gate to the west, facing Provincial Road 36 (now National Highway 54).
This side gate has a dome-shaped gate, very thick walls, and is 8 m long, forming two small caves on both sides and a large cave in the middle, so the pagoda has an additional name, Hang Pagoda.
Continue your Tra Vinh tour full day at Chua Ang Pagoda, one of the oldest and most significant Khmer pagodas in Tra Vinh.
Ang Pagoda is referred to as Wat Angkor Raig Borei in the Paly language. The pagoda is located in the Ao Ba Om scenic cluster and the Khmer Ethnic Cultural Museum, a prominent highlight that cannot be missed on the Tra Vinh tourist map.
From afar, you will see the temple buildings with tower-shaped architecture reaching straight up to the sky, majestic but no less solemn.
The Ang Pagoda has an ancient architectural style, carved and decorated with works of art such as statues of gods, dragons, divine birds, stories about Buddha Shakyamuni, etc.
According to history books, Ang Pagoda was built in the 10th century (990) and was built to its current scale in the 3rd year of Thieu Tri, or 1842, according to the Gregorian calendar.

Best time to visit
Planning a tour to Tra Vinh, nestled in the heart of Vietnam’s Mekong Delta, presents an opportunity to explore a region rich in cultural diversity, serene landscapes. The timing of your visit plays a crucial role in how much you’ll enjoy what Tra Vinh has to offer. Here’s a concise guide on the best time to embark on your Tra Vinh adventure.
Seasons and Best Time to Visit
Tra Vinh experiences a tropical climate, characterized by two main seasons: the rainy season from May to November and the dry season from December to April.
While you can visit Tra Vinh year-round, the best time to explore its beauty is during the dry season when the weather is more favorable, allowing for easier travel and exploration of its natural landscapes and cultural sites.
If you’re interested in experiencing the agricultural bounty of Tra Vinh, consider visiting between May and August. This is when local fruit orchards are in full bloom, offering visitors a chance to taste exotic fruits such as mangosteen, rambutan, and durian right from the tree. While this time falls within the rainy season, the showers are typically short-lived and can provide a refreshing break from the heat.
In addition, Tra Vinh is home to a significant Khmer population, and their cultural festivals add vibrant layers of experience for visitors. One of the most notable is Chol Chnam Thmay, the Khmer New Year, celebrated in mid-April with colorful ceremonies, traditional music, and dance performances. You will experience another culture of Vietnam.
The cuisine of Tra Vinh is as diverse as its culture, offering a plethora of mouth-watering dishes that reflect the rich flavors of the Mekong Delta. Notable mentions include the savory Banh Canh Trang Bang, a unique type of noodle soup, and the sweet and refreshing Dua Gang, a local coconut-based dessert.
Seafood lovers will delight in the fresh catches of the day, prepared in traditional styles that highlight the natural tastes of the river.
Other must-try dishes include Com Tam, served with grilled pork, and the light and flavorful Goi Cuon, fresh spring rolls that are a staple in Vietnamese cuisine.
Transportation
Getting to and around Tra Vinh is an adventure in itself. The province is accessible from Ho Chi Minh City by bus, car, or motorbike, offering a scenic journey through the Mekong Delta’s captivating landscapes.
Once in Tra Vinh, visitors can explore the area by renting bicycles, and motorbikes, or taking advantage of the local tuk-tuks. These modes of transport provide an intimate way to discover the hidden nooks and crannies of Tra Vinh, from its bustling markets to the serene paths that wind through rice paddies and fruit orchards.
When preparing for a journey to Tra Vinh, dressing appropriately and packing essential items are key to a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Opt for light and airy clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton or linen, ideal for the humid climate.
Long sleeves and pants will protect you from the sun’s harsh rays and mosquitoes, which are prevalent in the lush areas of Tra Vinh, especially during early mornings and evenings. Comfortable, sturdy shoes are a must, especially for navigating rural terrains and uneven paths around Chim Islet.
Don’t forget to bring a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen for sun protection, and reapply sunscreen as needed throughout the day.
Lastly, carrying local currency, Vietnamese Dong, is crucial for small purchases, as digital payments might not be an option everywhere. With these preparations, you’ll be set to explore and enjoy the unique charm and natural beauty of Tra Vinh.
As travel agents, we frequently receive a variety of questions before the trip-planning process even begins. Everything from the best period to book to determining if travel insurance is worth it. We love being able to share our professional expertise and personal experience with our clients, offering them confidence that their holiday will be nothing less than exciting.
While it may seem too early to plan a holiday, it's always a good idea to research travel tour prices ahead of time and book as soon as a suitable offer has been identified. "When it comes to the winter holidays from October to February in the next year—the priciest time of the year—your best bet is to book the tour service before this period," according to my own experience. "Look to book between one to two months ahead for domestic travel and two to 6 months ahead for international travel."
It is a good idea to check if you need a visa for Vietnam before applying for one, since this will save you both time and money, especially in times of crisis.
According to official announcements, residents of 25 countries will be able to travel to Vietnam and stay for 14 to 45 days (depending on nationality) without requiring a visa beginning in 2024.
To enter Vietnam, such citizens just require a valid passport with at least two black pages. The complete list of these countries can be found this link : //www.vietnam-visa.com/vietnam-visa-exemption/
