Highlights of Hanoi

HOA LO PRISON

Hoa Lo Prison Museum was initially constructed by the French colonial administration in the late 19th century to house Vietnamese revolutionaries and any critics of their reign.

The grounds of the prison house both communal and solitary cells, as well as a courtyard and the French guillotine, which is on exhibit.

Here you can find a wealth of information about the terrible regime that the inmates here were subjected to as part of Vietnam’s protracted struggle against French colonial power.

Along with personal artifacts of the inmates and a video chronicling their incarceration and final release, two rooms narrate the narrative of the American POWs housed here.

Water Puppet Theatre

Water puppet shows in Hanoi are a wonderful evening activity for families since they allow visitors to experience traditional Vietnamese art and entertainment.

Traditional Vietnamese water puppet shows used to take place outdoors during the monsoon paddy field flooding months have given way to indoor venues like man-made pools.

Featuring a live band using traditional Vietnamese instruments, most performances revolve around famous local stories.

With five performances every day at the Municipal Water Puppet Theatre, Hanoi is the center of modern water puppet theater.

Hanoi’s Train Street

Hidden within the mayhem of Old Quarter’s streets lies a unique railroad. Tourists to Hanoi call it “Train Street,” but locals call it Trân Phù, and high-speed locomotives rumble through the residential area.

Train Street has likely been plastered all over your Instagram feed. What makes it photogenic is that it functions similarly to other streets in the capital of Vietnam, except that a huge, speeding train tracks sit in lieu of a paved road. A succession of crumbling, tall, narrow structures run its length. Dangling from three stories above, women string laundry. Kids are being wild. Sitting on low plastic stools, residents pass the time by drinking strong coffee mixed with condensed milk.
